Eagles will monitor Carson Wentz throw count in training camp

Feb 11, 2024Feb 11, 2024

Carson Wentz had his full offseason with the Philadelphia Eagles, the first step toward returning to the MVP level from 2017 when the franchise quarterback got the Eagles off to a 11-2 start en route to the Super bowl title. Before Wentz was known for having his season end prematurely with injuries, the Eagles were monitoring their franchise quarterback and how many throws he was making during training camp.

The practice was routine under head coach Doug Pederson's philosophy, keeping his quarterbacks fresh in the six weeks leading up to the season opener. Pederosn limited the throws for Nick Foles in 2017 and Wentz his first two years in the league.

The same procedure will be used for Wentz this year.

"We're going to continue to monitor it. He's obviously been doing some great things. Just like we do with all our players," Pederson said. "But with quarterbacks, we've always monitored throws every day just to kind of keep it down as much as we can. We don't want to fatigue anybody's arm or anything like that.

"We'll continue to monitor him and see how he goes. But really no limitations right now."

The Eagles are just glad to have Wentz at 100 percent health on the first day of camp, as the franchise quarterback is 19 months removed from ACL and LCL surgery and 100 percent recovered from a spinal compression fracture in his back that ended his season last year.

If the Eagles played a game tomorrow, Wentz would be good to go.

"We're not going to hold back," Pederson said. "We will monitor throws. We do it with Nate [Sudfeld], Cody [Kessler] and [Clayton [Thorson]. We're going to monitor all the throws just so we're not overworking any arms, but there shouldn't be any limitations moving forward."

Having Wentz healthy is the most important factor with the Eagles, but if the franchise quarterback suffers a minor injury and has to miss time...the Eagles will have to rely on Nate Sudfeld instead of Nick Foles this time around. There's a reason the Eagles will be monitoring all their quarterback's throws this training camp, making sure all four of the signal callers receive an appropriate amount of reps over the next six weeks.

"Well, we were blessed to have Nick [Foles] for two years, and the things he accomplished with the team, the organization. But again, it's part of what I was saying earlier. It's a new team. We have to coach everybody up," Pederson said. "I've always been comfortable with Nate and the guys we have, Clayton and Cody. It brings out the best in everybody. This is a great opportunity for them to really - especially for Nate - to take hold of that backup spot, see his growth and his potential moving forward.

"As a coach, all I can do is give him the opportunity and coach him up, and put it in his hands."
